The Hacienda was one of the forms of land tenure during the Mexican colonial era, whose origin dates back to the second half of the 16th century.

It was the Spanish crown that award the first Spanish conquerors who ventured to populate the new territory with encomiendas (delivery of a group of indigenous people to a Spaniard for their “protection, education and evangelization”) and Mercedes (land ceded by the king as a payment) where the first haciendas were built.

There were different types of haciendas, and all of them suffered several transformations, during the 300 years that Mexico was a colony of Spain, and after our independence ward till nowadays.
